News from Mr Grady
Hello everyone,
What an amazing couple of weeks we’ve had, our Open Evening for prospective students, Induction Day for our Year 6 students joining us in September, a trip to Wimbledon this week, and trips out to Coventry Cathedral, Years 10 and 12 out on Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh retrospectively, Year 12 induction happening for our joining Year 12s, a musical celebration, and Sports Day today. Phew. And that’s not to mention al the exciting things going on in lessons and really challenging students to be curious and explore more and more challenging parts of the curriculum. Rugby High School at its best!
I’m very jealous in particular of the students who got to see the tennis stars at Wimbledon, as some of the games have been real nail-biters. There is something particularly exciting about tennis played at such a level, the resilience and sportsmanship of the players a real inspiration, and the range of attitudes to success on show also a great lesson for our students! Some players quietly and tenaciously taking responsibility for their game, and others often pointing the finger outside of themselves, finding excuses and not taking personal responsibility.
I spoke to the Year 12 students this week about that “half-way” point of their A-Levels, and could easily have said much the same to the Year 10. You are, if you like halfway through your match, and you have a choice now about how you want to finish – you might be feeling confident, or you might be feeling less so, but now is the time to pause, reflect, take stock and take charge. You’ve got the support of the crowd, and it’s over to you! The summer break will be a great time for that pause and reflection, and consideration of all the advice you’ve had this year.
It never ceases to amaze me that that 60 second break the tennis players have to eat a mouthful of banana, towel themselves down, and rehydrate can be such an intense refocus. You see players return to the court with changed attitudes, approaches and games, and coming back from disappointing starts to something more pleasing.
Well. We have 6 weeks to munch a banana, dry off and refocus – imagine how much more strongly you can return to the match with that!
Have a great week everyone, and looking forward to the group effort of Sports Day later on today.
With all best wishes, stay well and safe!
