News from Mr Grady
3rd April 2025
Hello everyone!
What a week of wonderful celebrations of the RHS community.
On Friday night we welcomed over 200 people to our Iftar event in the school hall where we saw families, students and staff come together in a shared fast-breaking. The first time we have held this event at RHS, and one we will definitely do again. The students that organised this event did a simply amazing job of making sure that everyone felt welcome and able to relax, eat and share the time together. A wonderful event.
And then on Tuesday evening we had our GCSE Certificate and special awards evening, where we celebrated the academic successes of our current year 12s in their GCSE exams from last August. It was lovely to see some faces that have moved on for their sixth form studies, but also to celebrate with families the massive achievements of these students.
As I said to them all during the evening, they are the first cohort to have Mrs Grimes and myself as the head and deputy leading the school, and we could not be prouder of them for coming through the last 5 years with such excellence.
The music and poetry we heard performed was equally impressive, and it was simply a wonderful “RHS” evening.
As we approach the Easter break, I’m sure people are looking forward to the rest and celebrating Easter with their families, friends and communities, and I wish everyone doing so a very Happy Easter and a restful holiday,
I hope you all have a good week,
Stay safe and well,
Mr Grady

Science Technician spotlight
We're continuing to highlight the wonderful Science technicians we have at Rugby High School. They work so hard behind the scenes ensuring our Science lessons are resourced with safe, interesting and exciting practicals and demonstrations. In this issue our highlighted technician is Mrs Young!
1. When did you join Rugby High School and how did you get into the role of Science Technician?
I joined Rugby High School as a Science Technician a year ago. I previously worked for 16 years in an infant school office and briefly worked for a financial adviser. I had a break of a few months before seeing the Science Technician role advertised and as I really enjoyed Chemistry when I was at school (a very long time ago...), I thought 'Why not??'.
2. What various jobs do you do in your role?
Preparing and clearing away practicals, taking textbooks to labs, preparing GCSE Biology folders, cleaning and re-stocking 2 labs, helping with the annual stock check of chemicals. I'm also a First Aider and Evac Chair trainer.
I also do a lot of washing up!
3. Describe what a typical day might be like?
We spend registration, break and lunchtime putting out/clearing away equipment and chemicals for practicals and making sure the correct textbooks are in the labs. Preparing any practicals for later in the day/week.
Every day is different depending on lesson requirements.
4. Do you receive ongoing training and if so, what?
As I'm new to the role and had no previous experience, there's something new to learn every day. I suppose every day is a training day!
5. What is your favourite part of your job?
I really enjoy finding out a practical has worked and hearing students enjoy their science lessons. It's great every day is different and not just being sat at a computer all day.

U13s Rugby High 2 (Eva SB, Melisa B) - 3 Harris
On Wednesday evening, 12th March, we hosted Harris U13s for another Rugby district football game. It was a close fought match, but Harris won by 3 goals to 2. Harris scored first, but we quickly equalised with a lovely goal from Eva SB, assisted by Efe. Harris scored another before half time, despite us dominating play and having several shots on goal that just went wide. We went back on, feeling strong and positive and we saw some fabulous defending from Holly in central defence, Riya who cleared a tackle from on the ground and Sophie who even used her face to clear the ball. Melisa and Ella both gave a solid performance in goal, Melisa coming up front for the second half and going on to score our second goal, with a nice assist yet again from Efe, who creates so many chances. We saw some great passing through midfield, with Eva SB and Eva L forming a nice partnership, and Christina A was everywhere we needed her to be, and more! Efe was nominated as player of the match.
Altogether a great game, hard work again with no subs, and so disappointing for our forwards not to get an equaliser from the many shots they had. Looking forward to the next one! Dr Brown and Mr Phillips would like to thank Mr Stanley-Blake for running the line for us, and all of the parents who make the after-school games possible by giving lifts and supporting.

Avon Valley match report

Rugby High School 3 (Melisa B, Eva SB 2) - 1 Avon Valley
On 19th March we played Avon Valley on a beautiful evening for a football game and we were lucky to have Dariush to referee the first half for us. It was a hard-fought game until the end, but we just had the edge with some lovely goals- one from Melisa, and two from Eva SB. Caoimhe assisted on one of Eva's goals, and worked incredibly hard everywhere on the pitch, and Efe had several shots and many great runs, pairing up with Melisa with great passing too. Eva L and Roisin did some skilful passing in midfield, creating chances up front. However, the game was very even and there were many chances from Avon Valley which were blocked by Ella in goal and our solid defence. Lead by Holly, strong as always in the centre of our defence, Sophie and Riya did some great tackles and blocked some certain chances from Avon Valley. So far we have won two and lost one in the East Warwickshire competition, and three games left to play!
Avon Valley voted Efe player of the match (again) - which shows what a standout player she is!

Bilton School match report

U13s Rugby High School 1 (Eva SB) - 7 Bilton School
We played an 8-a-side game against Bilton on Monday 24th March, as they were struggling for players, and despite the scoreline, our team put on a display of resilience and determination. We had several new players who stepped up as some of our regulars were away at an athletics competition. We had several shots on goal but the goalkeeper was amazing and saved them all. However, at the point when we were 7-0 down, several of our forwards broke through and Eva SB sunk a goal into their net - it felt as if we had won the game! In goal, Ella made some great saves, or we would have lost 12-0, and Caoimhe worked so hard everywhere, creating chances and clearing attacks with confidence. We saw some great defending from Niha and Riya, skilful passing in midfield from Eva L and Sophia H, some great forward moves from Eva L and Eva SB as usual and also from Rohitha and Niha, Rohitha nearly scoring on a fabulous run. Christina was everywhere she needed to be, bravely going in for tackles on some much taller players, but in the end Bilton chose our captain, Melisa as their player of match, who had showed great determination and an amazing work rate. Mr Phillips and Dr Brown were so proud of how they battled until the end, no one gave up and no heads went down. What a great team these U13s have been!

Biggest Ever Football Session
Friday 7th March was the #BiggestEverFootballSession! This is the 4th year of this celebration of girls’ football. This year, our Activators were lucky enough to be invited to Harris to do drills and games organised by the Harris Activators, and also to meet Kerys Harrop and Lucy Day. Kerys is a lecturer on the Football Coaching and Performance degree at Wolverhampton University, and has played professionally for Birmingham City, Tottenham and England U19s. Lucy is an ex-Harris student who plays for Birmingham City U21s and England U19s, as well as studying for her A levels. It was great for our Activators to have such inspiration and to hear about careers around football clubs, including coaching, physio, safeguarding and administration.
