News from Mr Grady
11th April 2024
Hello Everyone,
Welcome to the Summer Term – two quite long half terms, full once again of plenty of events and experiences for students here at RHS, as well, of course as the start to this year’s formal examinations for years 11 and 13.
As the clocks changed right in the middle of the holiday, that loss of an hour did not have quite the same impact as we of course had a whole week left holiday to recover. The change of time for British Summer time is one of those “glass half full” moments for me. As someone who very much appreciates their sleep, I cannot tell you how much losing an hour of sleep as the clocks go forward upsets my circadian rhythms, but on the other hand, the bonus is of course, lighter mornings and evenings as the summer sets in, and so although one could be grumpy about the short-term loss of something, one can really embrace the longer term bonus of so much more natural light, and the chance to get some much-needed vitamin D.
For students preparing for their formal examinations, it could easily be a case of “glass half empty” as you face the next few weeks of revision and examinations, but, with the incredible preparation you’ve had from your teachers, and the support of RHS staff, your family and friends, far better to take the glass half full approach of thinking, that for some short-term disruption, there will be real long-term gain: The longest summer holiday you’re likely to ever have if you’re In year 13, and of course the joy of opening your envelope in August and seeing your success on paper, the result of some short-term disruption for real long term success.
Life is full of those moments, where one can stare at some short-term feeling of difficulty or uncomfortable-ness, and choose in the moment to avoid, distract or run away from the challenge in front of you. At RHS, and in RH6, we hope that we offer enough opportunities to take on those challenges, to support you through them and out to the other side, realising your aspirations and revelling in your successes!
So, despite my still feeling the effects of losing an hour’s sleep, I am enjoying very much the bright and light drive into work, and the chance to do so many more things in the light in the evenings. I look forward to seeing the brighter side of a whole variety of things in the coming weeks and months.
I also hope that those of you celebrating Easter over the break had a restful and positive break, and that the family time and services attended gave you the chance to reflect and refocus, and of course for those of you celebrating Eid today and tomorrow, then I wish you a very happy Eid.
Stay well and safe everyone,
With all best wishes,
Mr Grady

Senior Physics Challenge
All 19 of our students who entered the Physics Challenge organised by BPhO this year achieved a Bronze certificate or above! Two of our students, Sophia Dixon and Milly Ogburn-Storey, achieved a Silver award which puts them in the top 20% of entrants and Nishad Deulkar achieved a Gold award, one of only about 5% of entries who did so.
The exam report celebrated their success explaining: "If your student has managed to achieve a number of marks on this paper, then they should be very proud of their achievement and you should congratulate them. They are amongst the best in the country taking a paper specifically set out to challenge them."
"Those who engage with this paper are the physicists with prospects. Physics is difficult problems. Easy ones are not worth putting a lot of time and effort into, except initially to practise the formula and to absorb the ideas. Problem solving is to improve resilience, command of the ideas, linking ideas together and showing a determination. The only way to improve determination and perseverance is to practice it when it is needed."
Here’s the results and congratulations to all of them!
Bronze 2:
Sophia Wilk, Thevin Wijesiriwardena, Mithun Suresh, Gabriel Debosz, Angel Bhatnagar, Nosang Lawati, Zachariah Mak, Olivia Sam, Joshua Holloway
Bronze 1:
Achsah Abraham, James English, Erin Hayman, Aneek Heer, Finley Hughes, Mithra Suresh, Haniya Nasir
Silver:
Sophia Dixon and Milly Ogburn-Storey
Gold:
Nishad Deulkar

Magistrate’s Mock Trial

Our team won the Coventry Local Heat at the Magistrate’s Mock Trial competition at the start of the Easter break. RHS has now progressed through to the next round and two of our Year 9 students also won individual prizes. Iris Parsons won Best Magistrate and Florence Kinsella won the Wild Card prize (awarded at the discretion of the heat organiser).
We faced some stiff tough competition – but our students were superb: they were impeccably behaved, gracious and enjoyed themselves thoroughly. They were a real credit to the school and to the Sixth Formers (especially Nathan Stitson and Louisa Bates) who’ve prepared them so well for the competition.

Linguistics competition success
Ansruta Ayyalasomayajula, in Year 13, has been competing in the UK Linguistics Olympiad and having got through Round 2 she has now been selected for the ‘training camp’ at Magdalen College, Oxford this week.
She is one of only nine competitors to reach this stage, and is now a potential candidate for the team of four who will go on to represent the UK in the International Linguistics Olympiad - in Brazil!
|
|
Ansruta explains more! “Regarding my experience so far, I sat the Round 1 paper in February, a 2.5 hour exam where you have to answer 5 problems that require analysis of different obscure languages. I then progressed to the second round, which is of the same format, but 3.5 hours and there are explanation questions where you need to explain how the language you are presented with works, in as much detail as possible. I enjoy the challenge of deducing the inner workings of different languages, and while it was very difficult, it was also good fun. I can't believe I've now been selected for the training camp, it's really exciting.”

Final U13s Football
Score: RHS 0 - 1 Ashlawn
Photo caption: l-r Katie C, Louise M, Ella M, Melisa B, Nimi K, Rohitha R.
This was a very close game and sadly we conceded a goal in the dying minutes of the second half. RHS fought hard for the whole game - we had no subs, as some of our U13 players were playing up in the U16s game - and our team showed a relentless work rate and determination until the final whistle. Melisa had a great game in goal, making many excellent saves and we also had several close shots on goal from Anushay, Ella M, Nimi and Louise, with lovely passing in midfield from Katie, Nimi and Louise. Sofia, Rohitha and Ella J worked well together as our back three and Sofia made an excellent clearance. We saw so much hard work from all of the team but particular shout outs to Nimi, Anushay and Ella M, who worked so hard for the whole game. Well done U13s on a great season!
Special thanks to our referee, Belle Ngan, Mrs Constable who recorded some of the action, and Mr Constable and Mr Allen, who ran the line for us.

A Howl about an Owl
Laura Richards
It was an owl lived in an oak,
Sing heigh ho! the prowly owl!
He often smiled, but he seldom spoke,
And he wore a wig and a camlet cloak.
Sing heigh ho! the howly fowl!
Tu-whit! tu-whit! tu-whoo!
He fell in love with the chickadee,
Sing heigh ho! the prowly owl!
He asked her, would she marry he,
And they’d go and live in Crim Tartaree.
Sing heigh ho! the howly fowl!
Tu-whit! tu-whit! tu-whoo!
“’T is true,” says he, “you are far from big.”
Sing heigh ho! the prowly owl!
“But you’ll look twice as well when I’ve bought you a wig,
And I’ll teach you the Lancers and the Chorus Jig.”
Sing heigh ho! the howly fowl!
Tu-whit! tu-whit! tu-whoo!
“I’ll feed you with honey when the moon grows pale.”
Sing heigh ho! the prowly owl!
“I’ll hum you a hymn, and I’ll sing you a scale,
Till you quiver with delight to the tip of your tail!”
Sing heigh ho! the howly fowl!
Tu-whit! tu-whit! tu-whoo!
So he went for to marry of the chickadee,
Sing heigh ho! the prowly owl!
But the sun was so bright that he could not see,
So he married the hoppergrass instead of she.
And wasn’t that a sad disappointment for he!
Sing heigh ho! the howly fowl!
Tu-whit! tu-whit! tu-whoo!
