A level Art and Textiles
What our students say
“Taking A Level Art has given me a chance to showcase elements of my personality that wouldn’t get to be seen as much in my other subjects. The method behind my artistic madness is valued and encouraged by my teachers and the lessons take on the form of both structured, tailored lectures and workshops and free working, independent sessions where play and expression are encouraged.’’ Miriam Clements, Year 12, 2022
“As a joiner I had high hopes for RHS sixth form and obviously they were met. The teachers in Art truly allow you to express your thoughts while still keeping you grounded – they allowed me to experiment with new mediums but also touch upon things I had already done.” Freya Bakewell, Year 12, 2022
“A Level Art offers a new level of independence and exploration from GCSE. You have total freedom to investigate whatever you like and the teachers are always able to guide you. With this comes more responsibility which prepares you for your future career. Being open to new ideas, mediums and techniques as well as many artistic lectures and workshops illuminates new pathways to help you develop and progress on your journey.” Elle Hardy year 13 2022
Overview of the Course
Art A Level, incorporating Fine Art and Textiles, is an opportunity for students to explore and discover the full range of their creative potential. The most important requirements are passion and engagement.
Art requires students to take creative risks in order to mature, to solve problems, to develop an aesthetic understanding and to communicate ideas using a visual language. It is exciting because students will go on a journey of discovery and they will construct a personal project that is based on their own interests, thoughts and ideas and that encourages them to develop a more heightened sense of the world around them. These are transferable and life skills.
Many of our students go on to study Art related courses at University to include: Architecture, Fine Art, Illustration, Game Art Design, Visual Effects and Digital Art, Textiles, Embroidery, Fashion Design, Fashion Marketing, Photo Journalism , Engineering, Product Design
Structure of the course
We follow the OCR syllabus which comprises of a Personal Project, to include a dissertation and an Externally Set Unit. When students join us in year 12 we run a series of structured practical workshops aimed at teaching and refining technical skills whilst also stimulating the creative thought process. These are coupled with lectures which enable students to appreciate the profound link between Art and Society. Students generate their own ideas for their personal project based on the workshops and lectures.
Year 13 students will receive their Externally Set paper at the beginning of the Spring Term which is a series of starting points and suggestions. The coursework is 60% and the Externally Set Unit is 40%.
