Tips from the Mental Health in Schools team (MHST)

MHST are available to support you and your school throughout the school year including term time and school holidays.

MHST produce useful tips sheets which you can download using the links below. They look at issues like stress and how to cope with it, for example the stress bucket activity, creating a calming toolbox and practising problem solving with a friend, where you imagine a stressful situation that might come up and discuss how you would solve it.

For relaxation MHST suggests breathing exercises, such as finger breathing or square breathing, practicing mindfulness by taking a break away from any screens and devices, going on a walk or being outside in nature, trying yoga to stretch out your muscles to relax and reduce tension and creating a calming space at home where you can take time to yourself.

Being outside can help decrease your anxiety levels, as well as lessen stress and feelings of anger. Exercise can also help with this and it's even better when you're outside!

Regular access to green spaces has been linked to lower risks of depression and improved concentration and attention. Cycling and walking both release our 'feel-good' hormones known as endorphins. These hormones help to relax your mind and make you feel happier. This boosts your mood and reduces your feelings of anxiety. Research shows that those who regularly cycle also have a significantly lower risk of feeling stressed!
