Rugby High hosts Young High Sheriff competition

The competition to find the next Young High Sheriff was launched on Monday 23rd September

Rugby High is delighted to be hosting the next Young High Sheriff competition! The High Sheriff is offering the opportunity for one young person to become a young High Sheriff for the day. The winner will accompany the High Sheriff and help them undertake their tradition role and carry out their official duties on behalf of the King, for a day!

Special guests were in school for the launch on Monday 23rd September. We welcomed Rajvinder Kaur Gill, High Sheriff of Warwickshire, who launched the competition, joined by her son, Harveer Singh Gill, Sophie Hilleary, former High Sheriff and Cllr Simon Ward, Mayor of Rugby, who extolled the virtues of entering the competition. We also welcomed Eric Wood, OBE DL, former Chief Executive Police Authority and former Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner, Natasha Booth, Deputy Principal of Ashlawn School and Gill Fletcher, competition organiser.

Head Teacher Mr Grady is excited to be hosting the competition: “It is an honour and privilege to be hosting this prestigious competition for the students of Rugby. This is wonderful for students and the school to engage in a much-needed community project about preventing crime. I’m excited for Rugby students to gain a prestigious opportunity to experience how the important, traditional role of High Sheriff can be supported by a Young High Sheriff and deliver improvements and greater awareness about crime prevention across Rugby."

The competition task is to produce a 3-minute video clip or write a 500-word essay, or 200-word poem on why you would want to be High Sheriff for the day. Rugby High will host the finals on Wednesday 4th December.

The aim of the competition is to raise levels of understanding about this important role by engaging young people in relevant work, heritage and traditions and to give a modern interpretation by using the role to develop student-led ideas about reducing crime.
